I have submitted requests to the Goodreads group of librarians and some of them have been very prompt at responding. Some of these moderators have been very good. It’s just a lack of oversight sometimes that becomes a problem.

One more thing I nearly forgot to mention is that Goodreads has retained listings of books that have been discontinued or gone out of print. It's frustrating to find a book you want to read but you can't easily get a copy or even an ebook file. Some titles I wanted to read I have found elsewhere like Project Gutenberg website or the Internet Archive. I thought Goodreads is supposed to be the branch of Amazon that helps customers purchase books that are currently for sale? Too many examples to list here, but it is an issue.

Yes. It’s a choice they made early to catalog every title ever published and just neglect the weeding. I will say on their defense they do seem to be at least updating author preference (by request, as it’s on the author has to make the request) of attachment . They did this for me. I appreciate that a lot.

I would abolish the ⭐️and the ⭐️⭐️ ratings from GoodReads because I have seen too many people use those ratings to attack books and authors they don’t like. It is possible to express critical opinions about stories without being mean. If I read a book that had such a low rating, I wouldn’t bother to finish it, and I would not post a rating to attack the creator. I have more important things to do.

Also to prevent some authors from mass voting titles on every list they find without paying attention to the content of those lists and determining if that book is relevant to the theme of the list they choose to vote on.

I see the lack of moderation and filtering out abusive accounts are common complaints against the site. It seems too easy to make an account and even multiple accounts for nefarious purposes, with little to no consequences.

Some of these things are related to author permissions to update metadata on their own creative works, updating customized lists on Listopia and preventing spammers and trolls from invading reader spaces with intrusive comments and abuse of the book rating system.

As an author on Goodreads, I appreciate Rovira and Wells insightful observations about the development of the website and the liabilities and shortcomings of the technical and social interface of this platform. I have made some observations about the use of this site and I have my own ideas for further improvement. I will share these observations more later.
